Venice is not easy to visit in a wheelchair but it is not impossible.
The biggest problem for tourists in wheelchairs are the bridges, but some are also accessible to disabled people.
The accessible bridges of Venice
On some bridges, long mobile walkways have been installed, others have been modified by reducing the height of the step to a minimum and rounding the edge, or small walkways have been inserted between the steps.
Accessible Venice divided into zones
To make Venice accessible, areas have been identified that are easy to visit for wheelchair users.
Within these zones, routes have been identified with the places to visit, the accessible bridges and the public toilets for disabled people (the toilets are free for disabled people and their companions).
You can find the maps of each zone on the website of the Municipality of Venice.
To move from one zone to another, however, you must use the boat (vaporetto), the means of transport used as if it were a bus.
Venice accessible by boat (vaporetto)
The boat has several lines, line 1 which is the most used, makes all the stops along the Grand Canal, it can be a way to admire Venice going back and forth.
The boat (vaporetto) is accessible to everyone, to get on and off a walkway is positioned and the staff is ready to help if necessary.
The cost of the ticket for a disabled person including the companion costs € 1.50 and can only be purchased at ticket offices with staff, it is not sold from automatic machines.
